Beer and Exmoor

Add your information to this page

Dunkery Ale is brewed from Exmoor spring water is produced in a stae-of-the-art microbrewery set up in an old cattle shed at Exford

The brewer is Exmoor born Jim Winzer. Dunkery Ale is 4% alcohol.

Exmoor Ales. Located on Golden Hill Wiveliscombe they operate from the former bottling plant of Hancocks, who brewed in 'Wivvy' from 1807 until the late 1950s when they were shut down after a merger.

Cotleigh Brewery is based in Wiveliscombe. The brewery began life in Devon in 1979, in an old stable block at Cotleigh Farmhouse near Tiverton . Husband and wife John and Jenny Aries have run Cotleigh since the early 1980s. At the time John was in the Merchant Navy but shore leave was spent helping out part-time at the original brew house which was a five-barrel operation. With demand soon outstripping supply Cotleigh crossed over the border to Wiveliscombe in 1980, setting up their mash, copper and fermenters in part of the disused Arnold & Hancock's brewery, which had been a part of the town since the early 19th-century until it was closed by Watney's in the 1960s.

Cotleigh Brewery is based in Wiveliscombe

Cotleigh Brewery produces recognised brands such as Tawny, Barn Owl, Golden Seahawk (formerly Golden Eagle], Buzzard, Cotleigh 25 and Harrier. The brewery provides both cask ales to 350 freehouses and bottled beers to 200 retail outlets in the South West. Entrance fee includes tour and tastings and proceeds will be donated to the Hawk and Owl Trust.

Moor Beer Company based near Ashcott. Moor Beer's debut ale was Withy Cutter, 3.8%, a pale brown beer, slightly malty with a moderate bitter finish and very tasty and refreshing . The name refers to the Somerset Levels' withy-beds which provide the foundation of wicker baskets and wicker furniture.
