Ghost Stories for Exmoor

Add your information to this page

The Ghost of Challacombe- She is a young servant girl from Barton Town who walks the road by Lee Ball Cross and only appears to men.

A Body At Pinkery - The reservoir has only been drained twice to look for bodies. The first time in 1889 when they found the body of Farmer Gammon. His pony was left tied to the bank and his clothes lay beside it. It is thought that he killed himself for being jilted in love. The second time they found nothing.

The Disappearance of the Reverend Mole In 1752 the Reverend Mole went for a ride near the Acland Arms, a notorious miner's pub just outside Challacombe. He was never seen again. Locals believe that he was swallowed up by the bog which is now named after him.

The Ghosts of The Black Venus Reputedly there are two ghosts, one at each end of the pub. Visitors have seen one ghost who sits on an old stool by the fire and the pub have unknowingly served him sandwiches. According to the landlady it taps and lights have sometimes been turned on at night for no apparent reason.

Valley of the Rocks - Valley of The Rocks is a local beauty spot with extensive coastal walks. The valley with its unusual turrets of rock is home to a herd of native British goats. The valley, legend says, was the location of the devil's castle and while he was away his wives took part in a naked drunken orgy with a neighbour. On finding out what had happened on his return he turned the women into the turrets of rock and destroyed the castle.

Challacombe has a ghost. She's a young servant girl from Barton Town who walks the road by Lee Ball Cross and only appears to men.

The B3188 is also thought to be haunted by the white clad phantom of George Sydenham, who rides a headless white horse to the North of the road towards Monksilver, which may link him to an older figure of legend. Ruth L. Tongue in her book Somerset Folklore suggests the tradition may have started due to wicked deeds that George may have committed during life. It was a common belief that those who had done wrong in life would have to return to earth in a terrifying form to atone for their sins.
