As a non-commercial Community web site we rely totally on people in the community to send us information and photos that will add to other people's knowledge of Exmoor and its surrounding area. Some of Exmoor's sites and buildings have legal protection.
Around 1000 buildings are listed and about 200 archaeological sites and structures are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. In addition there are 17 Conservation Areas within Exmoor National Park and two entries on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens.
However, these lists of protected sites can never protect the totality of what we consider important about Exmoor's past. The strongest form of protection is people valuing the past and wishing to conserve it for the future. Most destruction or damage is caused by lack of thought or by unintentional damage, not by wilful destruction. The importance of the Historic Environment has been reflected in the emphasis that has been placed on it by agri-environment schemes.
